This week has been full of surprises. We have been getting back our assignments, and handing in some of our final grades to count on into our report cards. This week, I think that this blog challenge was one of the best we ever had. It sums up everything we have read into a list. This is a very good way to end this wonderful school year. In this weeks blog challenge, I have to choose 5 books that I think would be best to discuss in a book club. I also have to explain a little about the novel (mood, tone, genre, reading level, plot line, and literary language).
I have read some of the best books and worst books this year. The fact of reading makes me so content. When I discuss about a book in a book club, I want a novel that can be seen in different ways by different people. For example, I can reflect the book, the Hunger Games to something than a different person would. So I have based the 5 books I have chosen on books I appreciated and some that I didn't.
These are the 5 books that I think best suit for a book a club discussion.......
1) The Devouring - Simon Holt
2) The Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins
3) Half moon Investigation- Eoin Colfer
4) Time Of The Reaper- Andrew Butcher
5) Wake- Lauren McMann
1) The Devouring
The Devouring is about this girl named Reggie. She is reading this diary called the Devouring. It is about vours that it your soul on sorrow night when you are the most afraid and throw your soul somewhere none ever knows.. She thinks that the diary is totally fake. But when the vours devour her brothers soul ans send it somewhere unknown. Then it starts getting very serious. The main characters are Aaron, Henry, Reggie. They all have very persevering personalities. Reggie is the protagonist of the book. But like usual, there is an antagonist and they are the vours. This book is very frightening and that is why I think that the genres for this book are: suspense, action, adventure, and last but not least, horror. This is a teen book so I recommend this book for ages 13 and up. Also because of the content of the book. There is some literary language found through out the novel like the climax and similes. The mood and tone through this book is dark. I think this book would be great for discussion because it is full of action ans suspense, leading to many things you can talk about (spoiler...... when she goes into the house and talks to the vour)
2) The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is about a girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives with her mother and sister (younger) in district 12. There is an annual Hunger Games with all districts participating. One boy and one girl from each district is chosen to fight in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a fight until death. When the sister of Katniss is chosen, she takes her place. This book is full of action, suspense and romance. The main characters are Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Katniss is very serious but deep down, a very nice person. Peeta is a sneaky boy but has blue eyes and blond hair. I would consider this book to be from the ages of 12 and up. Although it is a teen novel, I think that it is appropriate for a younger age. The mood and tone is a mix of happiness and darkness. There is also some romance. The literary language is rich in this book and that is a good thing to discuss in a book club. The storyline is original so that is another thing to talk about from the book.
3)Half moon Investigation
Half moon Investigation is about a boy named Fletcher Moon who is a certified detective. He loves solving cases and it is his hobby. But when a friend asks him to solve a case, little does he know that it was going to be one of his biggest cases ever. The case goes down way to far and he starts getting framed for it. This book is great for kids from ages 10-13. I think that the plot line is very original. I found that the antagonist and protagonist of the book working together brought a big message to people who read it. The genre was mystery, suspense, and action. I though that the mood and tone overall was suspense and some revenge. The literary language was not as much because it was more a children's book. The main characters of the book are Fletcher Moon, Alice, May and Red Sharkey. Fletcher Moon is the protagonist and Red Sharkey was thought to be an antagonist. The characters have special personalities.
4) Time Of the Reaper
A very short precis of the book time for the reaper would be the end of the world. A pandemic is going all over the world causing adults (people 18+) to die all over the world. There is no cause and no cure. Only people under the age of 18 stay alive. It is a survival story with romance and tragic death. The genre of the book is romance, action, suspense, and adventure. I didn't really appreciate the book. I thought that the storyline was not practical and I couldn't connect to the characters at all. The real main character is Travis. He is very kind and loves his family. He is very social and is a leader. I think that this book is for ages 12 and up because of the content and understanding. The mood and tone throughout this novel is very dark. The happening of peoples death brings this feeling. I think that is book is good for a book club discussion because you can argue about things that you liked and disliked during this book and explain using quotes and examples.
5) Wake
Wake is about a 17 year old girl named Janie who dreams other peoples dreams. She gets stuck into other peoples boring dreams. Sometimes a fantasy. But one day, when she dreams a bone chilling nightmare. Now Janie is more than a witness in a nightmare, she is a participant. I am reading this novel right now and I am enjoying it. I can really make connections from the world and from other books to this book. I really enjoy how this character is in peoples head dreaming their dreams. I think that this book is very interesting and a very good book to discuss about in a book club. The main character of the book is Janie. She is very kind and like any other teenage girl. She attends high school and is the protagonist of the book. I think that this book is appropriate fro ages 13 and up because of its content. The genre is adventure, action, romance, and suspense from what I have read. The mood of this book changes throughout this book. It starts nice but gets darker and darker.
